17 count single layer egg container

well, i measured a random "fancy" chicken egg and constructed a simple container that will hopefully fit onto a fridge door shelf easily enough.

I'm watching some chickens for a couple days and the owners keep the eggs in paper towels on the shelf, what is up with that?
