In nature, there are roughly two different types of structural support systems in most animals. They are either endoskeletal, or exoskeletal. I think this is also true of our various machines, and it's playing out in DIY 3D printers.

The Mendel represents en endoskelton. You can imagine putting a skin around it, but largely everything hangs off the 'bones'.

The MakerBot is more of an exoskeleton (at least my cupcake is). The panels are what everything attaches to. Without the panels,
